Gastric Band for Weight Loss

Overview

Gastric band surgery is a type of weight loss treatment that involves placing an inflatable band around the upper part of the stomach. This band reduces the size of the stomach, creating a smaller stomach pouch above it. As a result, individuals feel full after eating a smaller amount of food, which helps lower overall food intake and promotes weight loss.

The procedure is performed by a surgeon who places the band around the upper portion of the stomach and attaches a tube to it. This tube is accessible through a port under the skin of the abdomen. The surgeon can adjust the degree of constriction around the stomach by injecting saline solution into the band through this port.

Before undergoing gastric band surgery, there are some instructions for pre-procedure preparation.

  • You may be asked to lose weight before the surgery to reduce the risk of complications.
  • If you smoke or vape nicotine, you'll be asked to quit at least 6 weeks before surgery to lower your risk of postsurgical complications.
  • Your clinician may recommend outpatient testing, such as blood pressure tests, blood work, and an X-ray, about 3 to 4 weeks before surgery.
  • Additionally, you'll typically be asked to stop taking any over-the-counter medications known to increase bleeding, like ibuprofen and aspirin, in the week leading up to surgery.

After the gastric band procedure, there are instructions for recovery and follow-up.

  • You may go home on the same day as your procedure or spend 1 night in the hospital.
  • During the first few days at home, you can manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain medications.
  • Your surgeon may also prescribe blood-thinning medications to reduce your risk of blood clots.
  • Following surgery, you'll need to follow a liquid diet for at least a week before gradually transitioning back to solid foods.

It may take up to 6 weeks to fully return to your typical diet and be able to engage in strenuous activity or exercise after gastric banding. Your surgeon may tighten the band around your stomach about 4-6 weeks after the procedure. As for returning to work, you may be able to do so within a couple of weeks after gastric banding, but this can vary depending on your job requirements.

While gastric band surgery is generally considered safe, there are potential complications that can occur. These include infection at the incision site, slippage or erosion of the band, blockage or leakage in the digestive system, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It's important to follow all post-operative instructions and attend regular follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider.

If you experience severe pain, difficulty swallowing or vomiting after gastric banding, it's important to contact your doctor right away as these could be signs of complications that require medical attention.

Remember that this information is not personalized medical advice. It's always best to consult with your healthcare provider if you have specific questions or concerns about gastric band surgery or any other medical procedure.
