Be Prepared: Heimlich Manuever

Overview

The Heimlich maneuver is a technique used to help someone who is choking. It is an emergency procedure that can be performed when a person is unable to speak, cough, or breathe due to an obstruction in their airway. The maneuver involves applying quick and forceful pressure to the abdomen to dislodge the blockage.

Here are the steps to perform the Heimlich maneuver:

Stand behind the person who is choking and wrap your arms around their waist.

Make a fist with one hand and position it just above their navel but below their ribcage.

Place your other hand over your fist to provide additional support.

Perform a quick thrust upward and inward with your clenched fist, using the strength of your arms and upper body.

Repeat this thrust 6-10 times in rapid succession until the obstruction is dislodged or medical help arrives.

It's important to note that the Heimlich maneuver should only be performed on someone who is conscious and unable to breathe, speak, or cough. It is not suitable for children under 1 year of age or women in the late stages of pregnancy, as they may require different variations of the maneuver.

If the person stops breathing or becomes unresponsive, they should receive immediate medical attention, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if necessary.

Remember, it's always best to seek medical advice and training from a healthcare professional before attempting any emergency procedures like the Heimlich maneuver.
