Vaping
Overview
Vaping refers to using an electronic device (such as an e-cigarette) to heat a liquid to produce a vapor that’s inhaled. This vapor typically contains an active ingredient, flavoring, and other chemicals.
Substances that can be vaped include:
- Nicotine: Some people use vaping devices to help them quit smoking or as an alternative to traditional tobacco products. However, it's important to note that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not approve any e-cigarettes or vaping devices as smoking cessation aids.
- Tetrahydrocannabidiol (THC): This is the active ingredient that produces a “high” in marijuana.
- Cannabidiol (CBD): This is another active ingredient in marijuana. CBD does not produce a “high,” but may have other therapeutic effects.
Early studies suggest that vaping may be less harmful than traditional smoking. However, more research is needed to fully understand the potential risks of vaping.
Health concerns related to vaping include:
- Nicotine exposure: Vaping reduces exposure to harmful chemicals found in tobacco smoke, but it does not eliminate exposure to nicotine. Vaping products still contain habit-forming nicotine and other potentially harmful chemicals.
- Lung Illnesses: There have been reports of lung illnesses and deaths associated with vaping. The FDA has alerted the public to serious lung illnesses linked to vaping, including cases where certain oils used in vaping products were inhaled into the lungs without being filtered out. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of these illnesses.
- Other Harmful Substances: Even nicotine-free e-cigarettes and vapes can contain flavoring chemicals linked to lung disease, toxic heavy metals, and cancer-causing agents. It's important to be cautious about the ingredients in vaping products.
- Effect on Young People: The health effects of vaping can be particularly damaging for young people. Nicotine addiction can lead to concentration issues, restlessness, irritability, and difficulty sleeping. It's concerning that as more young people start vaping, there is also an increase in those interested in quitting.
If you have concerns about the health effects of vaping, it's always a good idea to consult with your doctor for personalized advice and guidance tailored to your specific situation.
