Be Prepared: Home First Aid Kit

Overview

A home first aid kit is a collection of supplies that can be helpful for treating minor injuries or illnesses at home. It is important to have a well-stocked first aid kit in your home because you never know when you might need to provide basic first aid.

Here are the items that a home first aid kit should include:

  • Adhesive bandages of assorted sizes: These are used to cover small cuts, scrapes, or blisters to protect them from dirt and bacteria.
  • Gauze bandages of assorted sizes: These are used to apply pressure to wounds, control bleeding, or support sprained joints.
  • Absorbent compress dressings: These are used to control bleeding and cover larger wounds.
  • Sterile gauze pads: These are used to clean wounds and apply medication or ointment.
  • Adhesive cloth tape: This is used to secure bandages or dressings in place.
  • Triangular bandages: These can be used as slings for arm or shoulder injuries, or as a bandage for head injuries.
  • Antiseptic wipes: These are used to clean wounds and prevent infection.
  • Acetaminophen or ibuprofen: These over-the-counter pain relievers can help reduce pain and fever.
  • Aspirin: Give 2 to 4 chewable tablets (81 mg each) if a heart attack is suspected. However, call emergency services immediately. Avoid giving aspirin if the person has an aspirin allergy, bleeding disorder, or is on blood thinners.
  • Antibiotic ointment: This is applied to minor cuts, scrapes, or burns to prevent infection.
  • Hydrocortisone cream: This can be used to relieve itching and inflammation caused by insect bites or rashes.
  • Calamine lotion: This can soothe itching and irritation caused by poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac.
  • Nitrile or vinyl gloves: These are worn when providing first aid to protect both the caregiver and the patient from potential infection.
  • Safety pins: These can be used to secure bandages or clothing in case of emergencies.
  • Scissors: These are useful for cutting tape, clothing, or other materials during first aid procedures.
  • Tweezers: These can be used to remove splinters, ticks, or other foreign objects from the skin.
  • Thermometer: This is used to measure body temperature and monitor fever.
  • Breathing barrier: This is a device that provides a physical barrier between the rescuer and the person receiving CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), reducing the risk of infection transmission.
  • Instant cold pack: This can be applied to reduce swelling or relieve pain caused by sprains, strains, or bruises.
  • Blanket: This can be used to keep someone warm in case of shock (a serious condition where the body isn’t getting enough blood flow, which can cause organs to stop working properly) or hypothermia (a dangerous condition that happens when a person’s body temperature drops too low due to cold exposure).
  • First aid manual: This provides instructions on how to provide basic first aid procedures.

It's important to note that while these items can be helpful in many situations, it's always a good idea to ask your doctor before using any medication or ointment, especially if you have specific health conditions or allergies.

Having a well-stocked home first aid kit in your car and at home ensures that you have the necessary supplies on hand to provide immediate care for minor injuries or illnesses until professional medical help arrives if needed.
