How COVID-19 Impacts Immunocompromised People

Overview

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that can have a significant impact on people who are immunocompromised (have weakened or impaired immune systems). Most people who get COVID-19 will have mild illness; however, some people develop severe disease affecting the lungs and other parts of the body and require hospitalization.

People who are immunocompromised include those who:

  • Are receiving active treatment for cancer
  • Have blood cancers, such as lymphoma and leukemia
  • Have or are currently receiving immunosuppressive therapy for organ transplant, including high dose corticosteroids and many cancer chemotherapeutic agents.
  • Have a moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency condition
  • Have AIDS or untreated HIV infection

People who are immunocompromised and also have other risk factors for severe COVID-19 are at even higher risk for severe complications.

Preventive measures to help reduce this population’s risk of getting COVID-19 include:

  • Avoiding close contact with people who have COVID-19 or may have been exposed to COVID-19.
  • Staying up to date with COVD vaccinations. This includes receiving updated vaccine for new virus variants. Check with a healthcare provider for guidance regarding updated vaccines, when to get vaccinated, and recommended number of vaccine doses based upon individual factors.
  • Practice good hand hygiene by washing hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer if soap and water aren’t available.
  • Avoiding large gatherings and maintaining physical distance from others when possible.
  • Wearing a well-fitting mask that covers the nose and mouth
  • Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces daily

People who are immunocompromised who are experiencing symptoms should take prompt action by:

  • Contacting their healthcare provider: The healthcare provider can advise on testing, interpreting results, and, if needed, initiation of supportive care and treatment to help reduce the chances of developing severe COVID-19.
  • Following medical advice
  • Isolating and protecting others

It is always important for individuals to consult with their healthcare provider for personalized advice and recommendations based on their specific medical condition.
