About Peak Flow Meters for Asthma

Overview

A peak flow meter is a handheld device used to measure how well someone can exhale air from their lungs. It helps assess lung function and is commonly used by people with asthma.

By measuring peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), a peak flow meter can track changes in airway function. This allows individuals to detect early signs of worsening asthma before symptoms appear. Regular use of a peak flow meter helps individuals establish their personal best peak flow. Deviations from this baseline indicate the need for action, such as adjusting medication or seeking medical help.

To use a peak flow meter effectively, follow these steps:

  • Connect the mouthpiece and set the marker to the bottom of the numbered scale.
  • Stand up and take a deep breath, filling your lungs.
  • Place your lips tightly around the mouthpiece and exhale forcefully in one breath.
  • Note where the marker stops and record the reading.
  • Repeat steps 2-4 twice more and record the highest reading.
  • Use these readings to track your asthma in an asthma diary or action plan.

Remember, consult your doctor for personalized instructions and interpretation of your peak flow readings.
