Complications of Emphysema
Emphysema is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It occurs when the air sacs in the lungs, called alveoli, become damaged and lose their ability to stretch. If not properly treated, chronic emphysema can be life threatening, especially as it progresses.
Chronic emphysema can put you at an increased risk for respiratory failure, which may require round-the-clock oxygen treatment and can be fatal. Other complications include a reduced ability to exert yourself, repeated lung or chest infections, and mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Having emphysema can also put you at higher risk of catching cold and flu viruses.
Several measures to reduce the risk of developing emphysema or to prevent complications include:
- Quit smoking or never start smoking
- Avoid exposure to irritants such as chemical fumes, dust, or secondhand smoke
- Eat a healthful diet
- Establish and maintain a moderate weight
- Take steps to prevent infection
