Pet Dander and Asthma

Overview

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. Pet dander can trigger asthma symptoms in individuals with allergic asthma. People get exposed to pet dander through direct contact with pets or by inhaling airborne particles. Here are some ways to reduce exposure to pet dander:

  • Find a new home for indoor pets that have caused allergy symptoms.
  • Keep pets outside if possible.
  • Select low-dander pets, such as those with fur or feathers.
  • If keeping pets indoors, keep them out of the bedroom.
  • Enclose mattresses and pillows in zippered plastic cases.
  • Remove carpets, as they can trap pet dander.
  • Vacuum regularly using a cleaner with a HEPA filter or double-layered microfilter bag.
  • Use a portable air cleaner with a HEPA filter in the bedroom.
  • Keep pets off furniture to minimize dander accumulation.

Remember, these steps may help reduce exposure, but it's important to consult your doctor for personalized advice. They can provide further guidance and recommend appropriate medications if needed.
