Developmental Milestones by Age Six Months
About Developmental Milestones
At 6 months old, babies reach important developmental milestones that show how they grow socially, communicate, think, and move. These milestones help caregivers understand what most babies can do at this age. Remember that every child develops at their own pace. Some milestones may appear earlier or later, and that variation is normal. Tracking developmental milestones can help you celebrate progress and recognize when extra support may be helpful.
Social/Emotional Milestones:
- Knows familiar people.
- Likes to look at self in a mirror.
- Laughs.
Language/Communication Milestones:
- Takes turns making sounds with you.
- Blows “raspberries” (sticks tongue out and blows).
- Makes squealing noises.
Cognitive Milestones:

- Reaches to grab a toy they want.
- Closes lips to show they don't want more food.
Movement/Physical Development Milestones:

- Pushes up with straight arms when on tummy.
- Leans on hands to support themself when sitting.
When to talk to your child’s doctor:
You should consider speaking with your child’s doctor if your 6-month-old is not meeting one or more of these milestones, has lost skills they once had, or if you have any other concerns.
