Do's and Don'ts of the First Trimester

Overview

During the first trimester of pregnancy, it’s important to prioritize your health and take certain measures to ensure the well-being of both you and your developing baby. Some healthy practices to follow include:

  • Take prenatal vitamins as recommended by your healthcare professional.
  • Engage in regular exercise, focusing on low-impact activities like walking, swimming, yoga, and water aerobics.
  • Incorporate pelvic floor exercises (also known as Kegel exercises) into your workout routine.
  • Maintain a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, low-fat protein, and fiber. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Consume enough calories to support your pregnancy (approximately 300 calories more than usual).

On the other hand, there are certain things to avoid during the first trimester, including:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise or strength training that could potentially harm your stomach.
  • Minimize or eliminate alcohol consumption.
  • Limit caffeine intake to no more than one cup of coffee or tea per day.
  • Quit smoking and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Steer clear of illegal drugs.
  • Avoid consuming raw fish or smoked seafood (such as sushi) and certain fish with high mercury levels (shark, swordfish, mackerel, white snapper).
  • Stay away from raw sprouts and cat litter (due to the risk of the disease toxoplasmosis).
  • Do not consume unpasteurized milk or dairy products, as well as deli meats or hot dogs.

Remember, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice tailored to your specific situation.
