Changes to Expect in the First Trimester

Overview

During the first trimester of pregnancy, both the expectant mother and the fetus (unborn baby) experience significant physical changes.

Changes for the expectant mother may include:

  • Hormone levels increase, which can lead to fatigue, mood changes, and cravings for certain foods.
  • Breasts may become tender and swollen.
  • The uterus begins to bulge and may reach the top of the pelvis.
  • The pregnant person may experience headaches, indigestion, constipation, and a need to urinate more frequently.
  • Morning sickness, which includes nausea and sometimes vomiting, is common during this trimester.

Changes for the fetus include:

  • The fertilized egg implants in the wall of the uterus and develops into an embryo.
  • By the end of the first 12 weeks, all major organs and structures have begun to form.
  • The heart starts beating regularly.
  • Fingers and toes begin to form, and muscles start working together.
  • The fetus grows to around 3 inches long and weighs nearly 1 ounce.

To ensure a healthy pregnancy during the first trimester, it is important to:

  • Eat a balanced diet that provides essential nutrients for both the mother and the developing fetus.
  • Take prenatal vitamins as recommended by a healthcare professional.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Get regular exercise suitable for pregnancy, such as walking or prenatal yoga (check with a healthcare professional before starting any exercise routine).
  • Get enough rest and sleep.
  • Attend prenatal check-ups with a healthcare provider.

Remember, every pregnancy is unique. It's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice on maintaining a healthy pregnancy during the first trimester.
