How to Do Upright Row

Overview

An upright row is an exercise that targets the shoulders and upper back, helping to build strength in these areas. It is a pull exercise, meaning you'll be pulling the weight toward you and working the muscles on the backside of your body, known as the posterior chain. Strengthening your posterior chain is especially beneficial if you sit for long periods of time.

To perform an upright row, take the following steps:

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a barbell, dumbbell, or kettlebell with an overhand grip in front of you.
  2. Keep your arms extended and your grip shoulder-width apart.
  3. Lift the weight by pulling through your elbows and keeping it close to your body.
  4. Stop when your elbows are level with your shoulders and the weight is at chest level.
  5. Keep your torso (upper body) upright throughout the movement.
  6. Pause at the top, then return to the starting position.
  7. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions (when you repeat the same motion).

Upright rows can be done anywhere using a barbell, dumbbell, or kettlebell. It's important to start with a weight that allows you to maintain proper form (correct body position and motion) and control throughout the exercise. It's recommended to start with 3 sets of 10-12 repetitions.

Incorporating upright rows into your fitness routine can be beneficial for individuals looking to increase shoulder and upper back strength. However, it's important to note that this exercise can cause injury if not done with correct form. Therefore, it's important to pay attention to proper form:

  • Make sure your elbows don't go above your shoulders during the movement.
  • Keep your torso upright and engage your core (stomach, back, and pelvis) muscles.
  • Avoid increasing the weight until you can fully control 12 repetitions, as this can increase the risk of injury.

While upright rows can be beneficial for many people, they may not be the best option for everyone. If you have any pre-existing shoulder or upper back injuries or conditions, it's best to consult with a healthcare provider before including this exercise into your routine.

Remember, upright rows are an effective exercise for strengthening the shoulders and upper back. By following proper form, you can safely add them into your fitness routine to see their benefits. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider if you have any existing injuries or conditions that may make this exercise not right for you.
