Fluid Retention as a Symptom of Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid)
Fluid retention, also known as edema or water retention, is a common symptom of hypothyroidism. Edema occurs when there is an accumulation of fluid in the body's tissues, cavities, or circulatory system. This can cause swelling and discomfort. Hypothyroidism causes a slower metabolism, reduced blood circulation, decreased flow of blood through the kidneys and lower body temperature. These factors can also lead to fluid buildup and retention, which can cause swelling (edema). Severe hypothyroidism may also lead to heart failure, which also causes fluid retention and edema.
Fluid retention in hypothyroidism may not cause noticeable symptoms for some people. It may cause discomfort from swelling, such as in the legs and feet. In more severe cases, fluid can accumulate around the heart or lungs and cause symptoms such as difficulty breathing or heart palpitations.
When fluid retention occurs as a symptom of hypothyroidism, it is important to address the underlying condition. Treating hypothyroidism with appropriate thyroid hormone replacement therapy has been successful in managing fluid retention in many asymptomatic patients.
Additional treatment may be recommended to help the body remove excess fluid to help alleviate symptoms. In emergency cases where individuals with hypothyroidism-related fluid retention affects the heart and blood pressure, procedures such as pericardiocentesis may be necessary. Pericardiocentesis is a procedure that involves draining excess fluid from around the heart.
If someone already has hypothyroidism and notices any new symptoms such as fluid retention or experiences worsening symptoms despite receiving treatment for their condition, they should also reach out to their doctor for further evaluation and potential medication adjustments. Regular communication with a healthcare provider is crucial for managing hypothyroidism effectively and addressing any concerns that may arise.
It is important to note that while these treatments have been effective for many individuals, it is always recommended to consult a doctor for personalized medical advice. They can evaluate the specific situation and provide appropriate guidance based on individual needs.
