About High Lipase Levels
Overview
Lipase is an enzyme made by the pancreas that helps break down fats during digestion. When there is a high level of lipase in the blood, it means there’s more of this enzyme than usual. High lipase levels can be a sign of different conditions, including:
- Acute pancreatitis: Pancreas quickly becomes swollen and painful.
- Chronic pancreatitis: Pancreas stays inflamed for a long time, causing permanent damage.
- Pancreatic cancer: Unhealthy cells grow out of control in the pancreas, forming a lump or tumor.
- Gallbladder disease: Problems where the gallbladder gets inflamed or blocked, causing pain and trouble digesting food
- Gastroenteritis (stomach flu caused by a virus)
- Intestinal problems: These issues can include a blocked intestine, which stops normal digestion and causes pain and swelling, or a peptic ulcer (a sore inside the stomach or small intestine).
- Diabetes: A long-lasting health condition where the body can’t handle blood sugar properly because it doesn’t have enough insulin or can’t use it right
- Kidney failure: Kidneys can’t clean the blood properly anymore, causing waste to build up in the body.
- Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV): This weakens the immune system, making it hard for the body to fight off infections.
- Hepatitis C: A virus that mainly affects the liver, causing swelling and damage
- Celiac disease: A health problem where eating gluten (found in wheat) damages the small intestine
- Inflammatory bowel disease: This includes illnesses where the digestive system stays swollen over a long time, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Symptoms of high lipase levels can be different depending on the cause but may include:
- Stomach (abdominal) pain
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
It's important to know that certain medicines can also change lipase levels. High lipase levels don’t always mean you need treatment. If you have concerns about your lipase levels, it's best to talk with your healthcare provider for advice and to see if you need any tests or help.
