Heart Attack in Athletes

Overview

A heart attack is usually caused by a blockage in one of the arteries near the heart. Heart attacks in athletes are rare but can occur. There are several potential causes for heart attacks in athletes, including:

  • Congenital heart conditions: These are heart conditions that are present from birth. One example is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which is a thickening of the walls in the left ventricle. HCM is believed to be the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in athletes and affects about 1 in 500 people in the general population. Another example is an atypical origin of a coronary artery, which refers to an improper placement of one of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart.
  • Coronary artery disease: In older athletes, most cases of sudden cardiac death are due to coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is the buildup of plaque in the walls of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. This can restrict blood flow and lead to a heart attack.
  • Myocarditis: Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle. While it can contribute to sudden cardiac death, it typically does not occur suddenly. Someone with myocarditis would likely feel sick and would not participate in sports.
  • Arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeat) or electrical disorders: These conditions can disrupt the normal rhythm of the heart and lead to a life-threatening event.
  • Blunt chest trauma: In rare cases, a severe blow to the chest during athletic activities can cause a heart attack.

It's important to note that these causes can vary depending on age and individual factors. It's also worth mentioning that medical care is often available at athletic events, and bystanders trained in CPR can provide valuable assistance if someone collapses on the field or court.

If you have concerns about your own health or if you're an athlete with questions about your risk for heart-related issues, it's always best to consult with your doctor. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and help ensure your well-being as you participate in sports or physical activities.
