Symptoms of Bile Duct Cancer (Cholangiocarcinoma)
Common Symptoms
Cholangiocarcinoma, also known as bile duct cancer, is a type of cancer that affects the bile ducts. It often does not cause symptoms in its early stages, and it is usually diagnosed when it has already spread beyond the bile ducts. However, when symptoms do occur, they are often a result of the tumor blocking the bile ducts.
Common symptoms of cholangiocarcinoma include:
- Jaundice: This is the most common symptom of cholangiocarcinoma. It causes the skin and whites of the eyes to turn yellow. Jaundice occurs when the tumor blocks the bile ducts, preventing bile from flowing properly.
- Itching: When bile builds up in the body due to blocked bile ducts, it can cause itching. This symptom can be quite uncomfortable.
- Unintentional weight loss: People with cholangiocarcinoma may experience weight loss without trying. This can happen due to a loss of appetite or because the body is not absorbing nutrients properly.
- Abdominal pain: As the tumor grows and presses against surrounding tissues, it can cause abdominal pain. The pain may be dull or sharp and can vary in intensity.
- Fatigue: Extreme tiredness or fatigue is a common symptom of cholangiocarcinoma. It can be caused by the cancer itself or by other factors related to the disease.
- Dark-colored urine and light-colored stools: When bile flow is obstructed, it can affect the color of urine and stools. Urine may become darker, while stools may become lighter in color and greasy. Cholangiocarcinoma can affect digestion and bowel movements. You may experience changes such as diarrhea or constipation.
These symptoms are considered "nonspecific" because they can be associated with many different diseases, not just cholangiocarcinoma.
