Medication Options to Treat Osteoporosis

Overview

Osteoporosis is a disease caused by a reduction in bone mass and changes in the structure of the bones. This makes the bones more fragile and increases the risk of bone fractures. There are several types of medications used to treat osteoporosis. Each medication type has a different effect in helping to treat the condition, and there are precautions and potential side effects associated with each type. The different types of medications used to treat osteoporosis include:

  • Bisphosphonates: The most common antiresorptive medications used to treat osteoporosis are bisphosphonates. They slow down the process of breaking down old bone, helping to prevent further bone loss. They include alendronate, ibandronate, risedronate, and zoledronic acid. Bisphosphonates are generally well-tolerated as the go-to medication for osteoporosis.
    • Side effects include:
      • Nausea
      • Abdominal pain
      • Irritation of the esophagus
      • Difficulty swallowing
      • Death of the jawbone caused by poor blood supply
  • Anabolic agents: Anabolic agents stimulate new bone formation, which helps strengthen bones. They are typically recommended for people with severe osteoporosis who haven't seen results from other medications. Examples of anabolic agents include teriparatide and abaloparatide. These medications are injected and can help increase bone density.
    • Side effects include:
      • Dizziness
      • Leg cramps
      • Increased risk of developing bone cancer
  • Selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs): SERMs mimic the effects of estrogen in the body to increase bone density. Raloxifene is a commonly used SERM for treating osteoporosis. It provides the benefits of estrogen without many of the risks associated with hormone therapy.
    • Side effect may include an increased risk of blood clots. Hormone therapy should be discussed with your care provider and personalized to your treatment needs.
  • Calcitonin: Calcitonin is a hormone that stops bone breakdown. It can be taken as a nasal spray or by injection. However, calcitonin is not a preferred medication for osteoporosis due to limited information regarding its effectiveness compared to other options.
  • Denosumab: Denosumab is a type of antiresorptive medication that is given by injection. It may be more promising than bisphosphonates at reducing bone loss.
    • Side effects include an increased risk for skin and other serious infections.

Remember to always consult your doctor before starting any new medication or treatment for osteoporosis or any other medical condition. They can provide personalized guidance based on individual health needs and considerations.
